Diffusion zone

Term for the alloy layer found at the solder joint at the interface of the solder to the part to be soldered. Another term is intermetallic layer. The liquid solder has reacted with the solid base material, forming a thin layer of intermetallic compound. Its thickness is approximately 0,5 µm.
