Eutectics

Eutectic is the term for that point in an alloy in which both phases are in balance, in other words, that point in the composition where the two descending curves meet (see phase diagram). The alloy behaves like a single metal and melts at one temperature rather than over a range. Its stage is either solid, liquid or eutectic. The temperature at eutectic is referred to as the melting temperature (in the heating up cycle) or the solidification temperature (in the cool down cycle). Having an identical melting- and solidification point is characteristic for an eutectic alloy. As a rule, this point is the lowest possible for this alloy.
