Freon

Freon is the brand name of a non-poisonous, colorless, non-flammable and inert fluorinated hydrocarbon manufactured by DuPont. Freon is an excellent organic solvent, but it is very volatile and goes very easily into the atmosphere. It is amongst the group of known “ozone-killers” and it became therefore, with the implementation of the Montreal Protocol as of 01/01/1989, prohibited for use. Up to its prohibition, it was the cleaning medium of choice for boards and electronic assemblies in the electronic industry.
